BESO History

The Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO) has its roots in the broader movement for bilingual education in the United States, which began gaining momentum in the 1960s and 1970s. Here’s a brief overview of its history:

1960s-1970s: The Rise of Bilingual Education

  • Civil Rights Movement: Advocacy for bilingual education emerged alongside civil rights efforts as marginalized communities sought equitable educational opportunities.
  • Federal Legislation: The Bilingual Education Act of 1968 was a landmark moment, providing federal funding to support bilingual programs and recognizing the importance of students’ native languages.

1980s: Organizational Development

Formation of BESO: Student organizations like BESO began to form in response to the growing need for advocacy and support among bilingual education students. These organizations aimed to foster community, leadership, and professional development for students pursuing careers in bilingual education.

1990s-Present: Growth and Advocacy

  • Increased Awareness: As awareness of bilingual education's benefits grew, so did the influence of organizations like BESO. They played a crucial role in advocating for policy changes and promoting the importance of bilingualism in education.
  • Cultural Events and Professional Development: BESO chapters across various universities have organized cultural events, workshops, and networking opportunities, helping students connect with educators, professionals, and community leaders.
